An epic fail of a bike ride

We head to the Pine Barrens.

2 beer cans from Three 3s in Hammonton NJ.
The only photo from Monday is some of the beer we brought home.

Sometimes a bike ride doesn’t go the way you want. This was one of them.

This is the best way to bike to New York City from New Jersey

Princeton Junction to Highlands to Manhattan.

This ranks up there with one of my best one-day bike rides. You really have to do it.

Day 10 biking in Quebec: A quick 23 miles to close the loop, plus extra tips

Bike path after bike path all the way back to our starting point.

That’s the Montreal skyline, seen from a bridge at mile 17.5.

What a finale to our bike adventure in Canada! Bike path after bike path all the way back to where we started in Boucherville, outside Montreal.

Day 9 in Quebec: A bike highway for part of our 73-mile day

Another great day on the Route Verte. Even with all that climbing.

In some ways this was our toughest day. Not only was it the most mileage but we climbed about 3,000 feet. And two-thirds of it was in the first 28 miles.

Day 8 of our Quebec adventure: 43 miles to a lake in North Hatley

Why can’t we have lots of long-distance trail networks like the Route Verte?

This sign, spotted at some campgrounds and hotels, signals a bike-friendly place to stay.

This was a day for gravel riders: ups and downs, curves and swooshes, through the woods and along a lake.

Day 7 of biking in Quebec: 47 miles on an amenity-filled rail-trail, then up a hill to a campground with a hotel

The bicycle adventure on the Route Verte continues.

This was a no-drama day — part of the beauty of cycling on Quebec’s Route Verte and its network of well-signed long-distance trails.

Day 6 of our Canada adventure: 55 miles from Quebec City to Plessisville

Oh that suspension bridge high above a dramatic waterfall!

Here’s to trail angels, the kind who pop up and guide you for a few miles through the suburban jungle, over highways and the twists and turns of neighborhood streets.

Day 5: Adventures on and (mostly) off the bike in Quebec City

The coolest summer hangout ever plus an abundance of French pastries.

Is this the coolest summer hangout or what? Feet dangling in cool water while you eat, drink and chat at a table or while sitting on an Adirondack chair?

A soggy day 4 of our Route Verte adventure gets us to the heart of Old Quebec City

Believe the weather forecast!

We hit the bad version of the bike trifecta today: rain, headwinds and heavier traffic, especially more trucks.

And the route no longer is pancake flat.

Day 3 of biking in Quebec: 51 miles along Route Verte 5 to Portneuf

Strawberries, ice cream and a detour.

This was a tough day for our group of five cyclists. Hot. Little shade. And the last thing we wanted: a 10-mile detour.
