The good and bad of biking across the Mario Cuomo Bridge (aka the new Tappan Zee Bridge)

The bridge across the Hudson River north of NYC has a bike/walk path.

A view from a bridge

Biking across the replacement for the Tappan Zee Bridge (I know, I’m supposed to say the Mario Cuomo Bridge) has been on my to-do list since the bike lane section opened, oh, about five years ago.

Erie Canal bike ride: We reach Albany on Day 7

We did it! 360 miles after leaving Buffalo (plus a detour to Seneca Falls), we reach Albany!

Congratulate four new end-to-enders!

Too much pie on the Erie Canal from Utica to Amsterdam on day 6

This was the prettiest segment of our Erie Canal bike ride. Also our longest.

It seems hard to believe, but there is such a thing as too much pie. And I learned that lesson on day 6 of our Buffalo-to-Albany bike ride along the Erie Canal.

Erie Canal bike ride: Syracuse to Utica on day 5

Today was history day for me.

The highlight of the 58-mile day: meeting up with one of our East Coast Greenway friends who happened to be in the area.

Erie Canal bike ride: Seneca Falls to Syracuse on day 4

Four important women who aren’t the usual Suffragettes.

Look for the references to 19 in Seneca Falls —we spotted signs for the right to run 19 (that’s a 19k run) and had breakfast (and a great conversation with two locals) at Cafe 19.

Erie Canal bike ride day 3: Rochester to Seneca Falls

This is the day we started seeing lots of people – and boats – along the Erie Canal.

This is the day we really started seeing people on the Erie Canal trail — walking, biking, even some who, like us, had gear and probably also are end-to-enders.

And then the boats. The canal is still in use for pleasure!

Erie Canal bike ride day 2: A wet day from Medina to Rochester

Today we coped with rain and grime. The best part of the day, though, came at the end.

This is not a photo Brian should see. He’s the guy who gives me grief over how filthy my bike gets.

I’m planning a bike ride on the Erie Canal — your must-sees?

Four people, four bikes but no mules, going the other way instead of from Albany to Buffalo.

Four people, four bikes but no mules — it’s going to be an adventure going the other way instead of Albany to Buffalo. But west to east is considered the better option. Downhill? Plus we don’t have to time the train at the end.

We’re heading out in early June. This is the plan.

I finished my Empire State Trail bike ride! Day 5: Elmsford to New York City

The bike trip that began in Albany and detoured to the Culinary Institute comes to a close with miles of a gentle downhill into the Bronx.

Wow, this was an easy way into Manhattan!

Empire State Trail bike ride day 4: Poughkeepsie to Elmsford

The long day — and a 9-mile climb –on the Empire State Trail from Albany to New York City.

I stared at that tall mass of green straight ahead. This must be the nine-mile climb our route planner had flagged.
