Biking and stargazing (if skies are clear) along the Columbia Trail

The story about how the observatory came to be is just wild. And it’s only 2 miles from the Columbia Trail.

The Columbia Trail gets lots of love. It’s a 15-mile trail in Hunterdon and Morris counties that started life as a railroad, then became a trail when a gas company ran a gas line underneath.

Delaware River Heritage Trail: 16 miles from Burlington to Bordentown

I hadn’t ridden between Burlington and Bordentown in a long time. Had the route improved? And how many warehouses would I find?

The view from the northern end of the trail between Roebling and the end of Crystal Lake Park.

The Delaware River Heritage Trail is a developing loop on the New Jersey and Pennsylvania sides of the Delaware River. I hadn’t been on the stretch between Bordentown and Burlington in a while. Plus New Jersey Transit is free this week. Two good reasons to check it out again!

I used the Lawrence Hopewell Trail to bike to Hopewell Valley Vineyards

Just too early for pizza and wine.

It’s no secret that I love the Lawrence Hopewell Trail and all its variety. So after last weekend’s bike-and-wine adventure in the other direction, I thought I’d try another winery. And I realized the LHT could get me most of the way there.

Here’s to my schnitzel ride in Burlington County

There’s this German restaurant near Fort Dix that I see every once in a while and think, “I’d like to try that.” So I figured out a bike ride.

Five bikes in synch!

Yes, I tried a peanut butter beer on this bike ride

We relied on the D&R Canal towpath for most of our bike ride to Ashton Brewing in Middlesex Borough.

I’m nominating Ashton Brewing in Middlesex Borough as the place to find some really weird — as in unusual, in the nicest way — beers.

A bike ride to a new brewery just off the Lawrence Hopewell Trail

The quest for “weird” beer continues.

We braved the mud and the wind — oh that wind! — to reach the Druery Brewery using the D&R Canal towpath and the Lawrence Hopewell Trail.

This technically isn’t part of the Lawrence Hopewell Trail — but I love it

I’m now using the paved path to the Mount Rose parking lot to shave off a bit of biking on Carter Road

From the LHT, turn right at this sign onto the path to the parking lot.

There’s now a paved wide pathway from the Mount Rose Preserve parking lot off Carter Road in Hopewell Township, NJ, to the Mount Rose section of the Lawrence Hopewell Trail.

A new way to bike to the new Flounder Brewing site

What would it be like to use the D&R Canal towpath and then Amwell Road to reach Flounder?

Flounder Brewery moved into a renovated old farmhouse last year (still in Hillsborough) and now has lots of indoor and outdoor seating. We biked once from Duke Farm and then via roads to the D&R Canal towpath at the Griggstown Causeway.

But what would it be like to bike almost all the way using the canal towpath? Time to find out with this route.

I discover a new way to bike between NYC and Princeton, New Jersey

Wonderful views of NYC (from the water), a lengthy trail and under 50 miles.

Spotted in Highlands, NJ.

I love the East Coast Greenway. I’ve biked the whole thing. And I like how the New York-to-Princeton route offers so much variety — urban, suburban, road, trail, towpath, amazing views from the Bayonne and Goethals bridges…

But there’s another way to reach Central Jersey, and it’s only fair to share it too. It also gets you wonderful views of NYC (from the water) and uses a lengthy trail to get you part of the way. Bonus: it’s shorter at under 50 miles.

An Art Deco surprise on the East Coast Greenway

I found this in a New Jersey park.

Sure, there’s Miami Beach, which is famous for its Art Deco buildings. But this is hidden in a New Jersey park, obscured by the veterans memorial.
