An Art Deco surprise on the East Coast Greenway

I found this in a New Jersey park.

Sure, there’s Miami Beach, which is famous for its Art Deco buildings. But this is hidden in a New Jersey park, obscured by the veterans memorial.

I was biking through Roosevelt Park in Edison the other day when I caught a glimpse of something and decided to investigate. It was a WPA fountain I’d read about, wondered why I hadn’t spotted it on a bike tide and then had pretty much forgotten. “Light Dispelling Darkness” tells of knowledge (and science — this is near Edison’s labs) overcoming evil, including the four horsemen of the Apocalypse (more here).

The fountain had fallen into disrepair and apparently has been restored … but it wasn’t turned on by early June so I can’t say whether it actually works. But it’s worth a stop whether you’re just enjoying the park or biking part of the East Coast Greenway.
