The 2017 Week-A-Year ride starts in Wilmington, N.C., and ends in Savannah. Last year’s ride was cut short by a hurricane barreling up the East Coast, so we stopped at Moore’s Creek Battlefield (a little-know Revolutionary War site, at least up north), 25 miles from Wilmington. I’ll be doing a loop from Wilmington to Moore’s Creek and back the day before the real pedaling begins.
(I did! Here’s the ride report.)
And it looks like Wilmington will be crowded: It’s Riverfest weekend. Now I know why the hotels are expensive.
Here’s the official plan, with links to how it went down:
Sunday, Oct. 8: Wilmington to Ocean Isle — 70 miles. Yeah, no boat after all. An overland detour, but only a 62-mile day.
Monday, Oct. 9: Ocean Isle to Myrtle Beach — 49 miles. The rain!
Tuesday, Oct. 10: Myrtle Beach to Georgetown — 45 miles. Breakfast isn’t included at the hotel, so maybe the Surfside Beach farmers market about 8 miles down the road is the place to stop? Just five blocks off the route (and beach). Yeah, we didn’t ride Every Damn Inch.
Wednesday, Oct. 11: Georgetown to Charleston — 85 miles. Here’s how the day went down.
Thursday, Oct. 12: Charleston to Beaufort — 81 miles. It ended up being “just” 76 miles or so.
Friday, Oct. 13: Beaufort to Savannah — 54 miles. Here’s the ride report.
Yes, those are long days going in and out of Charleston, but there will at least be time for one great dinner. Any suggestions on where to eat? I’ve already got this to help. And I hope it’s a fast ride to Savannah so I’ve got a bit of time to look around before the shuttle back to Wilmington. I’ve been to both places … but in December. October should be a bit more colorful.
