Raleigh to Wilmington, N.C.

This was my second Week-A-Year ride of 2016 as I work on riding the entire 3,000-mile East Coast Greenway. The plan was to go from Raleigh to Myrtle Beach, S.C. — but Hurricane Matthew got in the way.

This was the schedule … and then how it turned out.

Sunday, Oct. 2: We gather in Raleigh, NC, where we ended last year’s ride.

Oct. 3: 44 miles from Raleigh to Smithfield, NC. Oh those Triangle trails! (Again.)

Oct. 4: 69 miles from Smithfield to Fayetteville, NC. Hurricane Matthew starts getting real.

Oct. 5: 40 miles from Fayetteville to Elizabethtown, NC. The winery day.

Oct. 6: 58 miles from Elizabethtown to Wilmington, NC. Matthew is near. We had to call it quits at Moore’s Creek Battlefield. A year later, I rode the rest of the way to Wilmington.

Oct 7: 66 miles from Wilmington to Ocean Isle, NC — after an early-morning boat cruise on the Cape Fear River. Saved for 2017, but a preview: we missed the boat.

Oct. 8: 48 miles from Ocean Isle to Myrtle Beach, SC and a celebration to mark a trail opening. Then we get shuttled back to Raleigh. And saved for 2017 as well.
